Projected S.League 2007 Finish: 28-Sep: Gap Widened

The already-huge gap between the top-3 & the rest has widen again, as the lower-placed teams kept cancelling out each other in recent games (esp. Sengkang 2-2 Y Lions & Woodlands 1-1 Gombak).

As at 28-Sep:
# Team-------- P- W- D L GF - GA Pts GD
1 Singapore AF 26 20 2 4 75 - 31 62 (+44)
2 Home-------- 26 19 5 2 57 - 26 62 (+31)
3 Tampines---- 25 19 3 3 60 - 24 60 (+36)
4 Gombak------ 26 9 08 9 41 - 33 35 (+8)
5 Young Lions- 26 9 7 10 35 - 47 34 (-12)
6 Geylang----- 25 7 7 11 31 - 32 28 (-1)
7 Woodlands--- 26 8 10 8 38 - 43 28 (-5)
8 Albirex----- 26 7 6 13 36 - 39 27 (-3)
9 Balestier--- 25 6 7 12 32 - 41 25 (-9)
10 Liaoning--- 25 7 3 15 28 - 46 24 (-18)
11 Sengkang--- 26 4 7 15 28 - 53 19 (-25)
12 Super Reds- 26 3 7 16 19 - 65 16 (-46)

Projected Finish by the end of 2007 season:
# Team-------- P- W- D L- GF - GA Pts GD
1 Tampines---- 33 25 4 4 79 - 32 79 47
2 Singapore AF 33 25 3 5 95 - 39 78 56
3 Home-------- 33 24 6 3 72 - 33 78 39
4 Gombak---- 33 11 10 12 52 - 42 43 10
5 Young Lions 33 11 9 13 44 - 60 42 -16
6 Woodlands- 33 10 13 10 48 - 55 37 -7
7 Geylang----- 33 9 9 15 41 - 42 36 -1
8 Albirex----- 33 9 8 16 46 - 50 35 -4
9 Balestier--- 33 8 9 16 42 - 54 33 -12
10 Liaoning--- 33 9 4 20 37 - 61 31 -24
11 Sengkang--- 33 5 9 19 36 - 67 24 -31
12 Super Reds- 33 4 9 20 24 - 83 21 -59

As compared to the last post, the gap has now widen to a new season-high 35 points (up from the previous 33) & none of the teams from 4th to 12th has more wins than losses (previously we still had, ironically, Woodlands on 11-12-10), while Gombak will be the only team outside the top-3 to end with a positive G/D!

It's also worth noting that the fight at the bottom is getting even hotter with Sengkang & Super Reds expected to finish within 3 points of each other (down from the previos 5)...

Sengkang 2-2 Young Lions: 200 Points Reached!

For the entire September, the Young Lions have been trying hard to reach 200 league points all time (they already had 198 after beating Balestier 2-1 on 8-Aug), but were denied the chance as they only managed 1 point in the next 4 games (a winless run which included a draw with basement club Super Reds & 2 heavy defeats against title hopefuls SAFFC & Tampines).

It finally happened on 27-Sep though, as they drew 2-2 away with Sengkang to become the 10th team reaching the milestone. As at 27-Sep their all-time record is:
#- S GP- W PK D- L- F-- A-- GD Pts PPG-- #PPG
10 5 143 56 1 30 56 253 256 -3 200 1.397 8

Should they earn another 16 points from their 7 remaining games this season (which means at least 5 more wins, quite a tall order base on their current form nevertheless), they will be able to overtake the now-inactive Sembawang Rangers into 9th place.

Catching 8th-placed Jurong FC (now-inactive as well on 253 points) isn't such an unrealistic goal for next season though, given that they managed about 42 points for each season since 2003 (they should be able to make this mark in 2007 as well, having amassed 34 points so far).

The next team with a shot at 200 all time points this season is Gombak United. They are on 188 points now, thus needing 4 more wins from their last 8 games (not unlikely since they have not lost in the past 5 games). Pulling level with Sembawang is out of the question this season, though it should be a certainty in the next.

Ironically, the 27-Sep draw also meant that Sengkang (currently on 178 points) is mathematically out of the running for 200 points in 2007 (already their 8th season in the league) with 7 games to go. Truly minnows... :-)

Projected S.League 2007 Finish: 25-Sep

Home has won 3-2 against Albirex on 24-Sep, so you may think that this win should improve (or at least maintain) its projected finishing? We shall see...

As the S.League takes another quick break on 25-Sep, the Projected S.League 2007 Finish is now worked out with the 1st method as below:

As at 25-Sep:
# Team-------- P- W- D L GF - GA Pts GD
1 Singapore AF 26 20 2 4 75 - 31 62 (+44)
2 Home-------- 26 19 5 2 57 - 26 62 (+31)
3 Tampines---- 25 19 3 3 60 - 24 60 (+36)
4 Gombak------ 25 9 7 09 40 - 32 34 (+8)
5 Young Lions- 25 9 6 10 33 - 45 33 (-12)
6 Geylang----- 25 7 7 11 31 - 32 28 (-1)
7 Albirex----- 26 7 6 13 36 - 39 27 (-3)
8 Woodlands--- 25 8 9 08 37 - 42 27 (-5)
9 Balestier--- 24 6 7 11 30 - 38 25 (-8)
10 Liaoning--- 25 7 3 15 28 - 46 24 (-18)
11 Sengkang--- 25 4 6 15 26 - 51 18 (-25)
12 Super Reds- 25 2 7 16 16 - 63 13 (-47)

Projected Finish by the end of 2007 season:
# Team-------- P- W- D L- GF - GA Pts GD
1 Tampines---- 33 25 4 04 79 - 32 79 47
2 Singapore AF 33 25 3 05 95 - 39 78 56
3 Home-------- 33 24 6 03 72 - 33 78 39
4 Gombak------ 33 12 9 12 53 - 42 45 11
5 Young Lions- 33 12 8 13 44 - 59 44 -15
6 Woodlands-- 33 11 12 10 49 - 55 39 -6
7 Geylang----- 33 9 09 15 41 - 42 36 -1
8 Albirex----- 33 9 08 16 46 - 50 35 -4
9 Balestier--- 33 8 10 15 41 - 52 34 -11
10 Liaoning--- 33 9 04 20 37 - 61 31 -24
11 Sengkang--- 33 5 08 20 34 - 67 23 -33
12 Super Reds- 33 3 09 21 21 - 83 18 -62

So it's wrong! As compared to the last post, Home is now projected to finish 1 point less & drop to 3rd place... Why?

This is mainly due to its lower % of matches won vs played, as compared to Tampines / SAFFC. Even if Home win its next match, the projected finish will still be 78 points, though it can improve to 81 points if it win the next-next match as well (you may try do the math to verify)...

Young Lions 1-2 Woodlands: Top-3 Confirmed

Though for quite some time it's apparent that S.League 2007 is essentially a 3-horse-race, the top-3 teams are now (mathematically) confirmed as Young Lions lost 1-2 to Woodlands on 23-Sep (Gombak was mathematically out of the top-3 itself after drawing Home 1-1 on 19-Sep).

As at 23-Sep:
# Team-------- P- W- D L GF - GA Pts GD
1 Singapore AF 26 20 2 4 75 - 31 62 (+44)
2 Tampines---- 25 19 3 3 60 - 24 60 (+36)
3 Home-------- 25 18 5 2 54 - 24 59 (+30)
4 Gombak------ 25 9 7 09 40 - 32 34 (+8)
5 Young Lions- 25 9 6 10 33 - 45 33 (-12)
6 Geylang----- 25 7 7 11 31 - 32 28 (-1)
7 Albirex----- 25 7 6 12 34 - 36 27 (-2)
8 Woodlands--- 25 8 9 08 37 - 42 27 (-5)
9 Balestier--- 24 6 7 11 30 - 38 25 (-8)
10 Liaoning--- 25 7 3 15 28 - 46 24 (-18)
11 Sengkang--- 25 4 6 15 26 - 51 18 (-25)
12 Super Reds- 25 2 7 16 16 - 63 13 (-47)

Projected Finish by the end of 2007 season:
# Team-------- P- W- D L- GF - GA Pts GD
1 Tampines---- 33 25 4 04 79 - 32 79 47
2 Home-------- 33 24 7 02 71 - 32 79 39
3 Singapore AF 33 25 3 05 95 - 39 78 56
4 Gombak------ 33 12 9 12 53 - 42 45 11
5 Young Lions- 33 12 8 13 44 - 59 44 -15
6 Woodlands-- 33 11 12 10 49 - 55 39 -6
7 Geylang----- 33 9 09 15 41 - 42 36 -1
8 Albirex----- 33 9 08 16 45 - 48 35 -3
9 Balestier--- 33 8 10 15 41 - 52 34 -11
10 Liaoning--- 33 9 04 20 37 - 61 31 -24
11 Sengkang--- 33 5 08 20 34 - 67 23 -33
12 Super Reds- 33 3 09 21 21 - 83 18 -62

The gap between the 3rd & 4th place teams is now projected to be 33 points (78-45), almost triple of the 12 points (72-60) seen in 2001 season (which was also a 3-way-fight)!

Projected S.League 2007 Finish: 22-Sep

Home United's costly 1-1 draw with Gombak on 19-Sep has tilted the title favor back to Tampines!

As the S.League takes another quick break on 22-Sep, the Projected S.League 2007 Finish is now worked out with the 1st method as below:

As at 22-Sep:
# Team-------- P- W- D L GF - GA Pts GD
1 Singapore AF 26 20 2 4 75 - 31 62 (+44)
2 Tampines---- 25 19 3 3 60 - 24 60 (+36)
3 Home-------- 25 18 5 2 54 - 24 59 (+30)
4 Gombak------ 25 9 7 09 40 - 32 34 (+8)
5 Young Lions- 24 9 6 09 32 - 43 33 (-11)
6 Geylang----- 25 7 7 11 31 - 32 28 (-1)
7 Albirex----- 25 7 6 12 34 - 36 27 (-2)
8 Balestier--- 24 6 7 11 30 - 38 25 (-8)
9 Woodlands--- 24 7 9 08 35 - 41 24 (-6)
10 Liaoning--- 25 7 3 15 28 - 46 24 (-18)
11 Sengkang--- 25 4 6 15 26 - 51 18 (-25)
12 Super Reds- 25 2 7 16 16 - 63 13 (-47)

Projected Finish by the end of 2007 season:
# Team-------- P- W- D L- GF - GA Pts GD
1 Tampines---- 33 25 4 04 79 - 32 79 47
2 Home-------- 33 24 7 02 71 - 32 79 39
3 Singapore AF 33 25 3 05 95 - 39 78 56
4 Gombak------ 33 12 9 12 53 - 42 45 11
5 Young Lions- 33 12 8 13 44 - 59 44 -15
6 Geylang----- 33 09 9 15 41 - 42 36 -1
7 Woodlands-- 33 10 12 11 48 - 56 36 -8
8 Albirex----- 33 09 8 16 45 - 48 35 -3
9 Balestier--- 33 8 10 15 41 - 52 34 -11
10 Liaoning--- 33 09 4 20 37 - 61 31 -24
11 Sengkang--- 33 05 8 20 34 - 67 23 -33
12 Super Reds- 33 03 9 21 21 - 83 18 -62

As compared to the last post, Woodlands & Albirex have both move above Balestier, while the gap between Sengkang & Super Reds has now narrowed down (from the previous 9) to just 5 points!

Sengkang is well in danger of dropping into the last place for the 2nd year running, if it doesn't buckle up soon...

SLVC Preview: Balestier vs SAFFC on 29-Sep

Base on the previous post, we know that SAFFC's next SLVC opponent, Balestier, has won the title 3 times & rank 10th in the all-time mini-league.

Balestier has met SAFFC 8 times in SLVC games as tltle challengers, it lost 7 & drew just 1:
008 1996-05-18 Sing. AF-- Balestier- 0 0
020 1996-08-13 Sing. AF-- Balestier- 2 1
023 1996-08-24 Balestier- Sing. AF-- 2 3
137 2001-08-24 Balestier- Sing. AF-- 2 4
157 2002-05-03 Sing. AF-- Balestier- 6 1
179 2002-10-03 Balestier- Sing. AF-- 2 4
211 2003-10-11 Balestier- Sing. AF-- 0 3
271 2006-04-04 Sing. AF-- Balestier- 2 1

In their last 20 meetings since 2001, Balestier's Record is no better, it only drew 3 & lost 17!

If only the 12 games where Balestier played host were considered, then Balestier only drew 2 & lost the other 10!!

There's only one possible outcome from this match: a SAFFC win!!! :-)

Projected S.League 2007 Finish: 16-Sep

Tampines "Projected Championship" attained on 9-Sep did not last long though, as Home reclaimed the "title" with a 2-0 win over Liaoning on 14-Sep...

As at 16-Sep:
# Team-------- P- W- D L GF - GA Pts GD

12 Super Reds- 33 03 8 22 21 - 85 17 -64

As compared to the last post, Gombak has now leapt into 4th place, largely "thanks" to the fact that the Young Lions suffered yet another crushing defeat (a 1-7 loss to Tampines on 15-Sep after losing 0-5 to SAFFC on 10-Sep); while Woodlands has dropped to 8th, upon getting docked 6 points, as part of the punishment laid out by S.League on 13-Sep, for abandoning its match vs Tampines on 5-Sep.

SLVC: SAFFC 1-0 Albirex, Title Run Continues

Albirex's winless run in the SLVC has now extended to 8 games, as SAFFC posted yet another (1-0) win on 13-Sep.

After a very busy end-Aug/early-Sep period where it played 5 games in 15 days, SAFFC can now relax for a very long break as its next & only remaining game in September will be away to Balestier on 29-Sep, which is 16 days later.

Isn't the S.League schedule strange? Why stress a team so much in a short period of time (burnt-out), yet let it rest so long afterwards (rusty)?

SLVC Preview: SAFFC vs Albirex on 13-Sep

Having challenged for the SVC title in 7 previous attempts but couldn't win any of them, will Albirex finally break the jinx and earn a title of their own come Sep-13 against SAFFC?

Albirex's 7 previous SVC games: (2 draws & 5 losses)
217 2004-04-06 Woodlands- Albirex-- 3 2
238 2004-09-16 Albirex--- Tampines- 0 3
243 2005-03-24 Tampines-- Albirex-- 2 2
254 2005-06-28 Albirex--- Woodlands 0 0
278 2006-05-22 YoungLions Albirex-- 3 0
294 2006-10-01 Woodlands- Albirex-- 2 1
313 2007-07-06 Albirex--- Home----- 1 2

Its title challenges were denied:
thrice by Woodlands,
twice by Tampines &
once each by Young Lions & Home United.

Base on their head-to-head record since 2004, Albirex has not beaten SAFFC since 2005, & has even lost 4-straight since Aug-2006.

Looks like yet another win for SAFFC I think...

SLVC: SAFFC 5-0 Young Lions, what a win!!

The Young Lions had to swallow its 11th loss in 23 SLVC games as SAFFC romped to an impressive 5-0 win (with 4 goals in '67, '69, '73 & '75!!) on 10-Sep and moved back to the top of S.League 2007.

The other match on that night also ended in heavy win for the host, with Geylang beating Sengkang 4-0 and keeping its pursuit (509 points) on Tampines (510 points) in the all-time S.League Table.

With this win, SAFFC has also:
1.Overtaken Tampines (10 pts) into 2nd-place of the 2007 SLVC mini-league,
2.Steered 12 points clear of Home (198 pts) in the all-time SLVC mini-league standings,
3.Moved closer to the 700-point mark (currently it has 685) in the all-time S.League Table.

SAFFC's next game against Albirex on 13-Sep will be its 5th in 15 days, can it survive such a busy schedule? Time will tell again...

SLVC Preview: SAFFC vs Young Lions on 10-Sep

As we know from the previous post on 4-Aug, the Young Lions have won the SLVC 3 times & currently rank 7th in the all-time SLVC mini-league, so it won't be such an easy meat as Sengkang for SAFFC on 5-Sep...

Following the 0-0 draw with Super Reds on 7-Sep, the Young Lions now has 199 league points all-time. The 200 mark can be reached on 10-Sep, should it earn at least a draw against SAFFC.

To date, the Young Lions have met SAFFC twice in the SLVC, with both teams winning once apiece:
1 2003-09-20 Sing. AF-- YoungLions 3 1
2 2006-04-26 YoungLions Sing. AF-- 2 0 (This win also won it its 3rd SLVC title)

Although the SLVC records seemed evenly match, their head-to-head meetings since 2003 (the year Young Lions joined the S.League) paints a vastly different picture: the Young Lions has won just twice out of 14 encounters!

Having already beat the Young Lions twice in 2007 by comfortable scores (3-1 & 5-2), looks like a 3rd win is on the cards for SAFFC as well?

Projected S.League 2007 Finish: 8-Sep

As the S.League takes another quick break on 8-Sep, the Projected S.League 2007 Finish is now worked out with the 1st method as below:

As at 8-Sep:
# Team-------- P- W- D L- GF - GA Pts GD
1 Singapore AF 24 18 2 4 69 - 31 56 (+38)
2 Home-------- 23 17 4 2 51 - 23 55 (+28)
3 Tampines---- 23 17 3 3 50 - 21 54 (+29)
4 Young Lions- 22 9 6 07 31 - 31 33 (+0)
5 Gombak------ 23 8 6 09 36 - 30 30 (+6)
6 Woodlands--- 23 7 8 08 33 - 39 29 (-6)
7 Albirex----- 23 6 6 11 30 - 35 24 (-5)
8 Geylang----- 23 6 6 11 26 - 31 24 (-5)
9 Balestier--- 23 6 6 11 28 - 36 24 (-8)
10 Liaoning--- 23 7 3 13 26 - 41 24 (-15)
11 Sengkang--- 23 4 6 13 26 - 43 18 (-17)
12 Super Reds- 23 2 6 15 14 - 59 12 (-45)

It's worth noting that Super Reds is fast becoming the draw-specialist in the league, having tied 5 of its last 7 matches, it may soon overtake Woodlands as the team with most draws should the trend continues...

Projected Finish v1:
# Team-------- P- W- D L- GF - GA Pts GD
1 Singapore AF 33 25 3 05 95 - 43 78 52
2 Home-------- 33 24 6 03 73 - 33 78 40
3 Tampines---- 33 24 4 05 72 - 30 76 42
4 Young Lions- 33 14 9 10 47 - 47 51 0
5 Gombak------ 33 11 9 13 52 - 43 42 9
6 Woodlands-- 33 10 11 12 47 - 56 41 -9
7 Albirex----- 33 09 9 15 43 - 50 36 -7
8 Geylang----- 33 09 9 15 37 - 44 36 -7
9 Balestier--- 33 09 9 15 40 - 52 36 -12
10 Liaoning--- 33 10 4 19 37 - 59 34 -22
11 Sengkang--- 33 06 9 18 37 - 62 27 -25
12 Super Reds- 33 03 9 21 20 - 85 18 -65

As compared to the last post, there're essentially no changes in terms of finishing positions, though Woodlands could be docked many more points & drop a few more positions following its walk-out on 5-Sep. We'll see...

Yet Another Twist: Samat/Shah's Goals Not Counted

Just did a quick check on SLeague.Com again & found that the 2 goals scored by Tampines via Samat ('56) & Shah ('59) are now removed from both the Match Details & Top Scorers List.

In this case, as with the ruling on Afrique in 2006, the 5800th S.League goal was still technically scored by Tampines during the match, althoough it would not be credited to Shah now.

What a pity it was, that the honor of scoring a Milestone Goal has now been robbed from an outstanding player...

Let's look forward to the next Milestones though: with 59 games remaining & an avarage of more than 3 goals per game as at 7-Sep, the 6000th goal could well arrive by the end of 2007... :-)

It's Official: Woodlands 0-2 Tampines, Missions Accomplished Anyway...

As expected, SLeague.Com announced that the abandoned match between Woodlands & Tampines on 5-Sep would be awarded as a 2-0 win to Tampines.

Though it didn't explicitly mentioned if the 2 goals scored by Shariff Abdul Samat (56th min) & Noh Alam Shah (59th min) would still stand, I assume they would for now, base on the latest Top-Scorers list, which saw 1 goal credited to Samat's name.

In this case, Tampines has now overtaken Geylang into 3rd-place in the All-Time S.League Table & Shah would be the proud scorer of the 5800th goal in the S.League!!

Certainly some causes of celebration (?) for Tampines (having achieved all of its 3 objectives prior to this fixture), if not for the walk-out & the fact that it (according to its coach, Vorawan Chitavanich, :-) could have scored a few more that night.

It's not a baseless concern though, as the title could well be decided by GD, should any 2 of the 3 top teams finish level on points (currently SAFFC has +38, Home +28 & Tampines +29).

SLVC: Sengkang 0-3 SAFFC, next-up Young Lions...

On a day when the focus of the league centered on Woodlands' shocking walkout from its match with Tampines (more on this on earlier posts, & analysis later...), let us sit back & marvel the way SAFFC (once again) overpowered Sengkang (3-0) to the top of the table on 5-Sep, despite playing its 3rd game in 10 days...

Details of the match can be found on SLeague.Com, ChannelNewsAsia & 早报体育.
(Poor Sengkang has now gone winless in 20 SLVC games, managed only 3 draws, 17 losses, scored 16 & let-in 60 during this miserable run...)

With this win, SAFFC has also:
1.Pulled level with Tampines (10 pts) into 2nd-place of the 2007 SLVC mini-league,
2.Steered 9 points clear of Home (198 pts) in the all-time SLVC mini-league standings,
3.Moved closer to the 700-point mark (currently it has 682) in the all-time S.League Table.

SAFFC's next game against Young Lions on 10-Sep will be its 4th in 15 days, can it survive such a busy schedule? Time will tell...

Abandoned match awarded to Tampines

Full Article at: Abandoned match awarded to Tampines.

Following the abandonment of the NTUC Income-YEO’S S.League match between Woodlands Wellington and Tampines Rovers on 5 September 2007, the S.League Competitions Division has ruled that the match will be awarded to Tampines Rovers with a scoreline of 2-0.

The match was abandoned in the 60th minute after Woodlands Wellington staged a walk out and failed to resume play. Woodlands Wellington are thus deemed to have contravened Rule 8.3.4 (b) of Section A of the S.League Rules of failing to fulfil an engagement or play its fixture on the appointed date.

The S.League takes a very serious view of this incident and is currently awaiting the submission of reports from all relevant parties before the Disciplinary Committee convenes to decide on the next course of action.

The 5800th S.League Goal & Woodlands Fiasco

Wow, 5-Sep-2007 is indeed a day to be remembered, not for SAFFC's win in SLVC, but for the infamous Woodlands Fiasco which has now created records & threw several things into chaos:

1.It was the very first match in S.League to be abandoned due to Boycott.

2.Woodlands could well be the first side to be docked league points during a season.
(As far as I can recall, Sinchi were deducted 3 points after the 2005 season has ended; while Afrique had its 2-1 win over SAFFC in 2006 turned into a 0-2 loss, but no further deductions.)

3.Should a win (& 3 points) be awarded to Tampines (most probably the case), Tampines will overtake Geylang into 3rd-place in the all-time S.League standings.

4.Should the 2 goals scored by Tampines stand (this may not be the case though), Noh Alam Shah's 59th minute goal would be the 5800th S.League goal!
(For simplicity sake, the 2 goals awarded to SAFFC against Afrique in 2006 shall be counted as if they're valid strikes)

5.Should Tampines be awarded a 3-0 win (international standard) instead of 2-0 (seemed to be the S.League standard based on the Afrique ruling), Noh Alam Shah's goal will still count as the 5800th S.League goal in this blog, but the S.League would have seen 5801 goals all-time by 5-Sep-2007 (again for the sake of simplicity in future calculations).

How much point deductions do you think Woodlands will be slapped? And what kind of scoreline will Tampines be awarded?

Woodlands players troop off the field in protest

It was a flashback to the disgraceful scenes during the ASEAN Football Championship Final between Singapore and Thailand earlier this year.

Woodlands Wellington stained the image of the NTUC Income-Yeo's S.League when its players walked out en masse against Tampines Rovers on Wednesday.

The walkout, which has been described as an "absolute disgrace", was the first by a club in the history of the 12-year-old league.

Angered by several decisions made by referee P Pandian, Woodlands players marched off the pitch after title contenders Tampines went 2-0 up on the hour mark.

Football Association of Singapore competitions chief Quah Kim Song has promised action will be taken against the Rams.

He said: "We will wait for the reports of the match officials and match commissioner and after that, we will refer them to a disciplinary hearing."

While Tampines will almost certainly be awarded the three points for a win, Quah said the final decision on the result would be announced on Thursday.

The drama began in the 58th minute when Pandian sent off Woodlands midfielder Hasrin Jailani for elbowing Tampines' Mustafic Fahrudin.

Incensed by the decision, Azlan Alipah sent the Stags' midfield ace Peres de Oliveira sprawling to the ground with a cynical tackle moments later and Shariff Samat tucked away the subsequent free-kick to send the visitors' into the lead.

After the restart, Woodlands skipper Jerry Barthomoleusz headed for the bench to take instructions from coach Jorg Steinnebrunner.

The Woodlands players then stood still as Tampines began another raid up the field, which led to Noh Alam Shah doubling the Stags' lead.

The Woodlands players' then trooped off the pitch and into the dressing room, leaving the Tampines players, fans and match officials stunned.

The home fans then began abusing the referee and water bottles rained down from the stands.

The police arrived moments later.

As the stadium announcer told fans to calm down due to a "technical difficulty", cheers were heard emerging from the Woodlands dressing room and then, club chairman Francis Gomez emerged after speaking to the players.

When queried about the walkout, club manager Lawrence Lau would only say: "This is beyond my control."

Gomez was later heard exchanging words with Quah as he left the dressing room area.

The team emerged from the dressing room half an hour after the game was abandoned by the referee and Steinnebrunner said: "We will talk about this on another day. You saw what happened and there is nothing I want to say."

In the first leg of the ASEAN final on Jan 31, the Thai players walked off the pitch after Malaysian referee C Ravichandran awarded Singapore a penalty with the scores tied at 1-1.

After a 15-minute standoff, the players eventually returned to the field and Mustafic fired home the penalty.

Singapore went on to win the match 2-1 and lifted the ASEAN title after the Lions drew the return leg in Bangkok 1-1.

Tampines Rovers coach Vorawan Chitavanich was stunned at the behaviour of the Woodlands players.

"I have been here for eight years and this is the first time I am seeing something like this happen at club level," said the former Thai international.

"I spoke to their coach just a little while ago and he said that they acted on the instructions of their club chairman."

"It could be bad for us because even though the result will be awarded to us, we could suffer if the championship goes to goal difference.

"We could have scored a few more goals in the match, for sure. This is just a sad day for Singapore football."

SLeague.Com: Woodlands-Tampines match abandoned

Full Article at: Woodlands-Tampines match abandoned

Match No.137 of the NTUC Income-Yeo's S.League, played between Woodlands Wellington and Tampines Rovers on 5 September 2007, was declared abandoned at 9.20pm after 60 minutes of play.

The abandonment came following a mass walkout by the Woodlands players and staff.

Woodlands were trailing 0-2 at the time of the incident, having seen midfielder Hasrin Jailani sent off in the 53rd minute for a foul on Tampines Rovers midfielder Mustafic Fahrudin.

Tampines defender Shariff Abdul Samat subsequently scored the first goal in the 56th minute, and striker Noh Alam Shah made it 2-0 in the 59th minute.

After the second goal was scored, all the Woodlands players walked off the field instead of resuming play.

At press time, S.League Competitions Division has indicated that it will determine the final result of this match at a later time.

All tickets purchased for viewing the match will NOT be refunded.

Will S.League reach 5800 goals on 5-Sep?

On the eve of 5-Sep, 2 interesting S.League games will take place concurrently, featuring quite a few implications for SAFFC (2007 Title & SLVC) & Tampines (2007 Title & All-Time-Records).

However, it is also worth noticed that prior to these 2 games, 5795 goals have already been scored in the S.League since 1996, where 3092 of these came from the host teams, while the remaining 2703 were contributed by the away teams.

With both SAFFC & Tampines managing more than 2 goals per game so far in 2007, & the 2 match-ups being traditionally high-scoring affairs, the 5800th goal should be easily passed on this day...

The million-dollar question is: WHO will score that milestone goal in WHICH game?

Phild Processing for SAFFC's Jerseys: Unfair Advantage?

Full Article at Phild Processing for SAFFC's club jerseys:

"Phiten Singapore and SAFFC are pleased to announce the successful Phild Processing of SAFFC’s club jerseys for the current S.League season.

Phiten Singapore and SAFFC took the opportunity during the two-week season break in June, to send all the first team home jerseys and shorts to Phiten’s headquarters in Kyoto, Japan to undergo this unique Phild Processing exercise.

The jerseys and shorts arrived in Kyoto on 19 June, and were delivered back to the Warriors Arena, SAFFC’s home ground, on 11 July..."

Will this hand SAFFC an unfair competitive advantage over its rivals?

Tampines' Triple Missions (Part 2) on 5-Sep

Earlier on I've posted about Tampines' Triple Missions vs Sengkang on 21-Aug. This time round Tampines again will have 3 missions in mind vs Woodlands on 5-Sep:

1.Keep pace with the top-2.
2.Avenge its season opening loss (1-2) against Woodlands.
3.Overtake Geylang (507 points) in the all-time S.League table (Tampines currently has 505).

However, unlike Sengkang, Woodlands is a much tougher opponent for Tampines. Base on the head-to-head records between them since 2001, Tampines has won 7, drew 6 & lost 7 out of 20 meetings, so there's not much advantage here.

There's another twist though, by counting only the matches hosted by Woodlands, Tampines' record was surprisingly better, with 6 wins, 1 draw & 4 losses out of 11 meetings (including 5 straight wins from 2004 to 2006!).

Looks like a tricky match-up indeed, what do you think?

SLVC Preview: Sengkang vs SAFFC on 5-Sep

As we probably have known by now, based on the earlier post, Sengkang (the Perennial Struggler) has never won the SLVC title in 19 attempts (all it managed was just 3 draws & 16 defeats!) since joining the S.League in 1998, having scored 16 & conceded 57 goals along the way.

Against SAFFC, Sengkang has lost all 4 encounters between them (3 of which were heavy defeats by 3 clear goals or more), having scored 5 & conceded 19 goals:
070 1999-03-31 Sing. AF- Sengkang-- 6 1
155 2002-04-19 Sengkang- Sing. AF-- 2 3
170 2002-08-03 Sing. AF- Sengkang-- 4 1
212 2003-10-16 Sing. AF- Sengkang-- 6 1

In 14 encounters since 2001, Sengkang has won only once (back in 2001) & drew twice, while SAFFC won the remaining 11!

It will be a major upset if SAFFC don't win this one, isn't it?

SLVC: SAFFC 3-2 Liaoning, next-up Sengkang...

By beating Liaoning 3-2 on 1-Sep, SAFFC has extended its hold on the current SLVC title to 3 games, moved-up to 3rd-place in the 2007 SLVC mini-league, & more importantly, climbed to the top of S.League 2007 table for at least 72 hours, before Home play Super Reds on 4-Sep.

More details on the game on SLeague.Com, CNA & ZaoBao.

While losing to SAFFC was no shame, Liaoning still remain 3rd from bottom in the 2007 SLVC mini-league & 2nd from bottom all-time. Base on the remaining fixtures list, it's unlikely that Liaoning will be able to challenge for the title again this season, unless a few events happen in tandem (SAFFC loses its title later on, & the new holder meet with Liaoning, etc...).

SAFFC's next game will be against Sengkang on 5-Sep, do watch out for the coming preview!
