The Race for 4th Place (updated 31-Oct-2007)

Just an update on the race for 4th place in S.League 2007 (which we all know by now, should come down to just between Gombak & Young Lions).

At first glance of the latest league table as at 31-Oct (after YL came from behind to beat Balestier 3-2), you may think that Gombak should still easily get 4th place as it is just 2 points behind with 2 games in hand:
4. Young Lions 31 12 7 12 42-53 43 (-11)
5. Gombak 29 11 8 10 46-37 41 (+9)

However, my take is that even if Gombak can beat Liaoning on 1-Nov, YL has a much better chance of finishing 4th as Gombak will need to face title chasers Tampines & SAFFC in its final games, while YL's remaining opponents are much less tougher.

Gombak's remaining fixtures & forecast:
2007-11-01 Liaoning (H) - W = 44 pts
2007-11-14 Tampines (A) - L = 44 pts
2007-11-18 Balestier (H) - W = 47 pts
2007-11-21 Singapore AF (A) - L = 47 pts

YL's remaining fixtures & forecast:
2007-11-03 Super Reds (A) - W = 46 pts
2007-11-10 Geylang (H) - W = 49 pts

What do you think?

SLVC Report: SAFFC 1-1 Tampines, next-up Woodlands...

As expected, SAFFC's run of consecutive wins (& perfect record at CCK stadium in 2007) finally came to an end as it was held 1-1 by Tampines on 27-Oct.

Several key notes from this result:

0) The balance of the 2007 S.League title has continued turning towards Tampines, although the picture will become much clearer after it square off with Home United on 6-Nov, while Home itself will face SAFFC on 16-Nov in yet another potential title (or runner-up?) decider.

1) In the 2007 SVLC mini-league, SAFFC now has 26 points (8W-2D-2L, F33-A13) & moved within 7 points of the current leader, Home United.

2) In the all-time SLVC mini-league standings, SAFFC now has 223 points (66W-25D-18L, F250-A127) & moved 25 points clear of 2nd-placed Home United.

3) In the all-time S.League standings, SAFFC now has 698 points (212W-2PK-58D-50L, F797-A390) & is most certainly going to capture its 700th point & 800th goal in 2007, with 3 more games to go!

4) SAFFC has now scored 90 goals in S.League 2007, just 10 more goals away from the Century Mark!

5) Tampines' record in the all-time SLVC mini-league is now 27W-14D-21L, F117-A99 & still remain 5th (out of 19 teams).

SAFFC will play Woodlands next on 5-Nov, stay tune for the preview on this clash...

Title Decider #1: SAFFC vs Tampines on 27-Oct

Veterans take the spotlight
Grabovac and Duric will need to step up in vital clash

Weekend • October 27, 2007
NTUC Income-Yeo's S-League 2007
SAFFC v Tampines Rovers
7.45pm, Choa Chu Kang Stadium (Sat)

It is possibly the biggest match of the 2007 NTUC Income-Yeo's S-League season.

After Home United's surprising loss to the Young Lions on Thursday, SAFFC and Tampines Rovers know whoever comes out on top in the "clash of the titans" on Saturday will be the favourites for the title as the season reaches a climax.

While SAFFC will be confident in front of their own fans at Choa Chu Kang Stadium, the match has taken on a whole different hue with the absence of the national team players on the night, due to their call-up for the Singapore-Palestine World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

Tampines look to be hardest hit.

Besides missing Shariff Samat, Mustafic Fahrudin, Ridhuan Muhamad and Noh Alam Shah, all on Lions' duty, the Stags also have playmaker Peres de Oliveira and Zulkarnaen Zainal out injured.

But veteran striker Mirko Grabovac (picture left), who spent five trophy-laden years at SAFFC before signing with the eastern giants, insisted the team were confident.

"There's a great atmosphere in our camp," he said on Friday.

"We are capable of winning this match even without Peres and Zulkarnaen."

"Our winger Aliff (Shafaein) will be playing and he could be the key," added the Croatian-born Singaporean.

Having won the title twice with SAFFC and Tampines, Grabovac knows what it takes to finish on top.

While he is nursing a groin strain, at this stage of the season pain is put on the backburner.

"It's not a big problem, really," said the 36-year-old. "We will all be trying our very best in this game, you can be sure of that."

SAFFC's veteran striker Aleksander Duric (picture, right), 37, has banged home 36 goals so far in the competition.

He has great respect for the Stags' marksman, who has 12 goals.

"There's a lot more to his game than just scoring goals," said the Aussie-turned Singaporean.

"He is well-known at Choa Chu Kang and is still a very dangerous player."
Urging Singapore fans to come out and catch a good game, Duric added: "I have a lot of trust in how we play our games. We hold nothing back and the fans will enjoy that." — Paul Green

SLVC Preview: SAFFC vs Tampines on 27-Oct

As we know from previous post, SAFFC's next SLVC opponent on 27-Oct, Tampines Rovers, has won the SLVC title 8 times & currently ranked joint-4th all-time (with Woodlands), behind SAFFC (13), Home (11) & Geylang(10).

Tampines Rovers's all-time record in the SLVC mini-league is 5th best, having played 61 macthes, won 27, drew 13 & lost 21, amassing 94 points in the overall standings, behind:
1. SAFFC---- (66-24-18, 222),
2. Home----- (59-21-20, 198),
3. Geylang-- (32-17-23, 113) &
4. Woodlands (27-18-24, 099).

In this top-of-the-table clash, several things will be at stake:
1. SAFFC (currently 2 points clear at the top but have played a game more) will hope to beat Tampines and pull away from Home United in the S.League 2007 title race.
2. SAFFC will be keen to exact revenge on Tampines who have already beat them twice in 2007 (Tampines' 2-1 win on 20-Apr was also an SLVC match).
3. SAFFC will hope to continue catching up with Home in the 2007 SLVC mini-league standings.
4. This will also be a dress-rehersal for the 2007 Singapore Cup Final in November.

If Tampines win this contest instead, it will not only take a big step towards the 2007 title, but also increases its SLVC titles won (9 overall) & move closer to Woodlands in the all-time SLVC mini-league (97 vs 99)!

Tampines has met SAFFC 12 times in the SLVC so far; it won 3, drew 1 & lost the other 8; scored 15 & conceded 31 in the process, not exactly a favourable record.

Base on their 20 league meetings since 2001, Tampines has won 7, drawn 3 and lost the remaining 10 (though it has not lost to SAFFC in 4 games since late 2006).

If only the 10 games where SAFFC played host were counted, Tampines has won just 3 and lost the rest (again, it has not lost to SAFFC in 2 games since late 2006).

I would say this will likely turn out to be a draw. What say you?

1. Added the halfway position (1/2P) of the League Champions.
2. Also added the League Runners-up & their halfway positions.
3. Also added the eventual position (EP) of the Halfway Leaders.

2007-- ?------- ? ?---------- ? Home------- ? After 17th Game

FYI, SAFFC & Tampines were in 2nd & 3rd-place by the halfway point of 2007 season.

So history suggested that if someone wants to win the league, it should keep pace with the leaders at the halfway point of the season, & aim at nothing lower than 3rd-place by then!!

Liaoning 1-2 Balestier: Finally Going 6th All-Time

As we focused on the Geylang-SAFFC game on 10-Oct, which had huge implications on the 2007 title & SLVC, the other game on the same day had its fair share of significance as well...

With the 2-1 win over Liaoning, Balestier has finally overtaken (the now defunct) Tanjong Pagar at 6th-place in the all-time S.League Table.

Currently the all-time records for the 2 teams read:
# Team- Season GP- W- PK D- L-- F-- A-- Pts GD-- PPG--
6 Balestier 12 319 092 2 71 154 475 648 351 -173 1.100
7 Tjg.Pagar 09 234 100 2 46 086 399 385 350 +014 1.496

Note that Balestier took almost 3 seasons to catch-up with Tanjong Pagar, after the latter folded in 2004. Back then their records read:
# Team Season GP- W- PK D- L-- F-- A-- Pts GD-- PPG--
4 Tjg.Pagar 9 234 100 2 46 086 399 385 350 +014 1.496
8 Balestier 9 234 065 2 51 116 344 484 250 -140 1.068

Balestier is now 92 points shy of 5th-placed Woodlands (443 points), though it is likely that the team will remain 6th for at least a few more years to come, unless it can do significantly better than Woodlands for several consecutive seasons...

Tanjong Pagar fans out there need not feel too bad about this though, in terms of points-per-game (PPG), the Jaguars is still head-&-shoulder above the Tigers!!

12 Oct 2007 Y Lions VS Albirex preview

SLVC Report: Geylang 1-3 SAFFC, next-up Tampines!!

SAFFC has strolled to another victory (3-1) against Geylang on 10-Oct, its 7th consecutive win!

Several key notes from this result:

1) In the 2007 SVLC mini-league, it now has 25 points (8W-1D-2L, F32-A12) & moved within 8 points of the current leader, Home United.

2) In the all-time SLVC mini-league standings, it now has 222 points (66W-24D-2L, F249-A126) & moved 24 points clear of 2nd-placed Home United.

3) In the all-time S.League standings, it now has 697 points (212W-2PK-57D-50L, F796-A389) & is most certainly going to capture its 700th point & 800th goal in 2007, with 4 more games to go!

4) SAFFC has now scored 89 goals in S.League 2007, just 11 goals away from the Century Mark! Only 3 teams have achieved that feat previously: SAFFC in 2001 (101 goals) / 2002 (104) & Home in 2003 (104).

5) Geylang's record in the all-time SLVC mini-league is now 32W-17D-23L, F135-A97 & still remain in 3rd-place (out of 19 teams).

SAFFC will play Tampines next on 27-Oct, stay tune for the preview on this titanic clash!

Do Leading Halfway Lead to Championships?

Just another way to look at the S.League title race over the years...

In European Leagues there's an honor called "Winter Champions" that is awarded to the leaders when the league takes a break during winter, which usually signify the halfway point of the season as well.

Since there's NO winter in Singapore, I'll just look at the "Halfway Leaders" as below:

Season Champions- Halfway Leaders- Remarks
1996-- Geylang--- Geylang--------- After 1st Series
1997-- SAFFC----- SAFFC
1998-- SAFFC----- Tanjong Pagar
1999-- Home------ Home
2000-- SAFFC----- SAFFC
2001-- Geylang--- Home------------ After 17th Game
2002-- SAFFC----- SAFFC----------- After 17th Game
2003-- Home------ Home------------ After 17th Game
2004-- Tampines-- Woodlands------- After 14th Game
2005-- Tampines-- Tampines-------- After 14th Game
2006-- SAFFC----- YoungLions
2007-- ?--------- Home------------ After 17th Game

Out of 11 seasons, 7 Halfway Leaders have went on to win the league, that's 63% chance (almost two-third!), pretty decent isn't it?

It's worth noting that only 1 of the remaining 4 Halfway Leaders did finish as league runners-up eventually (Tanjong Pagar in 1998).

The worst finish for a Halfway Leaders was 6th by Woodlands in 2004, while Home & Young Lions both ended-up 3rd in 2001 & 2006 respectively.

Should Home win the league in 2007, the magic number would become 8 & success rate = 67%!

Similar analysis was done for the MLS of USA as well, go check it out if interested...

SLVC Preview: Geylang vs SAFFC on 10-Oct

As seen in earlier posts, SAFFC's next opponent, Geylang, has a respectable pedigree in SLVC.

It is currently the 3rd-best team in the virtual championship, both in terms of titles won (10, the only 3 teams with double-digit win) & all-time mini-league standings (32-17-22, 113 pts; again, the only 3 teams with triple-digit points).

Base on the last 10 matches taken place at Bedok Stadium, the tie seemed evenly matched, with Geylang winning 4, SAFFC winning 6 & no draws.

This is further confirmed by their all-time SLVC encounters, where they are dead-locked at 5W-3D-5L, with SAFFC scored 19 & let-in 18.

If only the matches at Bedok were counted, the 2 teams are still inseparable at 2W-0D-2L, though SAFFC did score 7 & conceded just 4.

Truly a close match for this one, wouldn't be surprised if it ended up as a draw!

The 5900th S.League Goal

Contray to mess of the 5800th S.League Goal marred by Woodlands' walkout, there're no such controversies this time round for the 5900th S.League Goal, as it was rightfully scored by Woodlands (ironically) #16, Imran Sahib, in the 51st minute of the 2-3 loss to Home on 7-Oct. Congrats to him! (but not to the team, :-p)

5898 goals has already been scored prior to the games on 7-Oct, the following list the time-line of goals for the new milestone (assuming both games did kicked off together exactly at 8pm):
5899: Woodland's #9-, Laakkad Abdelhadi---, 45th min
5900: Woodland's #16, Imran Sahib---------, 51th min (Congrats!)

5901: Home's #15----, Diakite Fode Bangaly, 66th min
5902: YoungLions' #5, Noor Ikhsan---------, 72th min (Own Goal!)
5903: Home's #15----, Diakite Fode Bangaly, 73th min
5904: Home's #10----, Kengne Ludovick-----, 86th min

With the current strike rate of 3.18 goals per game (522/164) in S.League 2007, the 6000th goal could be scored 31 games (96/3.18) from now, when Geylang takes on Home on 20-Nov...

Note: The 5900 & 6000th goal has happened (or going to happen) earlier than the predictions in my earlier post, a sign that the league is scrambling more goals towards the end of season, :-)

Projected S.League 2007 Finish: 7-Oct

Tampines has "regained" the "title" following its 4-1 win against Balestier on 5-Oct, eventhough SAFFC & Home both won as well last week.

12 Super Reds- 33 04 9 20 26 - 87 21 -61

Now SAFFC is expected to score more than 100 goals this season, but it can only finish 3rd, :-p

SLVC: SAFFC 6-2 Super Reds! Next-up Geylang...

Wow, SAFFC just can't seem to stop scoring goals these days as it romped to another big win (6-2) over Super Reds on 6-Oct, following its trashing (5-1) of Balestier the week before on 29-Sep.
Several key notes as a result of this landslide win:

1) In the 2007 SVLC mini-league, it now has 22 points (7W-1D-2L, F29-A11) & moved within 11 points of the current leader, Home United.

2) In the all-time SLVC mini-league standings, it now has 219 points (65W-24D-2L, F246-A125) & moved 21 points clear of 2nd-placed Home United.

3) In the all-time S.League standings, it now has 694 points (211W-59D-50L, F793-A388) & is most certainly going to capture its 700th point in 2007, with 5 more games to go!

4) The 8 goals scored during the SAFFC-Super Reds game also pushed the all-time goals total to 5898.
The 5900th goal should be easily reached on 7-Oct as 2 games will be taking place by then: Young Lions vs Liaoning & Woodlands vs Home, let's see who will be the "lucky" guy to score this Milestone Goal!

5) This heavy loss also meant that Super Reds is now (mathematically) out of the top-5 for S.League 2007.
Another (likely) loss to Tampines on 9-Oct would rule them out of the top-6 as well (eventhough it was expected to finish no better than bottom-2 all season).

6) Super Reds' record in the all-time SLVC mini-league is now 1W-0D-4L, F4-A16, still good for 14th-place (out of 19 teams).

SAFFC will play Geylang next on 10-Oct, stay tune for the preview!

2. Home-------- 27 65 (+34) - 1st, 3rd
3. Tampines---- 26 63 (+38) - 1st, 3rd
---------------------------------------
4. Gombak------ 27 38 (+9) -- 4th, 10th

---------------------------------------
5. Young Lions- 27 34 (-13) - 4th, 12th
6. Geylang----- 27 31 (+0) -- 4th, 12th

The possibilities will get narrower as each team runs out of games, so stay tuned for more updates on this in the coming weeks!

The 500th Goal of S.League 2007

Geylang's #17, Hafiz Rahim, has scored the 500th Goal of S.League 2007!

His 59th-minute strike in the 3-0 win over Liaoning on 4-Oct was also the 3rd goal of the game. Congrats to him...

Base on the current avarage of more than 3 goals per game, it is quite certain that the 600th goal mark can be reached by the end of the season as well. However, it remains to be seen if the eventual total will surpass those set by any of the longer (33-game) seasons in S.League history:
2001: 689 (3.48)
2002: 742 (3.75)
2003: 631 (3.19)

On the other hand, the all-time total is now 5882 goals. With the current strike rate, goal #5900 should arrive during the 8-Oct game between Gombak & Sengkang; while the 6000th goal could be scored on 22-Nov when Balestier take on Sengkang in the final game of the season. (what a fitting finale!!)

Meanwhile, as some might have noticed, with the 1-1 draw with Albirex on 1-Oct, Woodlands has recovered the 6 docked points & still not given up the hope on a 4th-place finish yet... Though for now I'd still think that it should be decided among Gombak, YL & Geylang.

SLVC Preview: SAFFC vs Super Reds on 6-Oct

The fact that SAFFC's next SLVC opponent on 6-Oct, the Super Reds, has won the SLVC title once (hence better than the likes of Sengkang & Albirex), in spite of its relatively short history & obviously dismal league records so far, should surprise quite a few people.

Even more remarkably, the Super Reds is one of the few clubs (the others being Home, SAFFC, Woodlands & Geylang) that won the SLVC title in its first attempt (remember that Balestier waited 8 seasons for its first win!), with an upset 1-0 victory against Geylang back on 18-Mar.

In all, Super Reds' SLVC record reads:
301 2007-03-18 Geylang--- Super Reds 0 1
302 2007-03-29 Super Reds Balestier- 0 2
304 2007-04-15 Tampines-- Super Reds 5 1
310 2007-05-27 Super Reds Home------ 0 3

Base on their head-to-head records (6-0 & 1-0), it seemed that SAFFC should win this too. Any objections?

Projected S.League 2007 Finish: 2-Oct

As the league takes yet another quick break on 2nd-Oct, the simple projection now shows that SAFFC will win S.League 2007!

As at 2nd-Oct:
# Team------- P- W- D L GF - GA Pts GD
1 SingaporeAF 27 21 2 4 80 - 32 65 (+48)
2 Home------- 27 20 5 2 62 - 28 65 (+34)
3 Tampines--- 26 20 3 3 62 - 24 63 (+38)
4 Gombak----- 26 9 8 09 41 - 33 35 (+8)
5 Young Lions 26 9 7 10 35 - 47 34 (-12)
6 Woodlands-- 27 8 11 8 39 - 44 29 (-5)
7 Albirex---- 27 7 7 13 39 - 40 28 (-3)

8 Geylang---- 26 7 7 12 31 - 34 28 (-3)
9 Balestier-- 26 6 7 13 33 - 46 25 (-13)
10 Liaoning-- 25 7 3 15 28 - 46 24 (-18)
11 Sengkang-- 27 4 7 16 30 - 58 19 (-28)
12 Super Reds 26 3 7 16 19 - 65 16 (-46)

Projected Finish:
# Team------- P- W- D L GF - GA Pts GD
1 SingaporeAF 33 26 2 5 98 - 39 80 59
2 Tampines--- 33 25 4 4 79 - 30 79 49
3 Home------- 33 24 6 3 76 - 34 78 42
4 Gombak--- 33 11 10 12 52 - 42 43 10
5 YoungLions 33 11 9 13 44 - 60 42 -16
6 Woodlands 33 10 13 10 48 - 54 37 -6
7 Albirex---- 33 9 9 15 45 - 49 36 -4
8 Geylang---- 33 9 9 15 39 - 43 36 -4
9 Balestier-- 33 8 9 16 42 - 58 33 -16
10 Liaoning-- 33 9 4 20 37 - 61 31 -24
11 Sengkang-- 33 5 9 19 37 - 71 24 -34
12 Super Reds 33 4 9 20 24 - 83 21 -59

The next interesting question is: With the current strike rate of almost 3 goals per game, will SAFFC score more than 100 league goals in 2007?

SLVC: Balestier 1-5 SAFFC, next-up Super Reds

As expected, SAFFC mercilessly rolled over Balestier 5-1 away on 29-Sep & extended its hold on the SLVC title to 7 games.

It now has 19 points (6W-1D-2L) & remain 2nd in the 2007 mini-league. To overtake the leader, Home Utd, who's already on 33 points (10-3-1), it will need to win at least 5 out of its 6 remaining games (assume that it remain unbeaten until the end of the season for this analysis to be relevant):
2007-10-06 Super Reds (H) - if W = 22 pts
2007-10-10 Geylang--- (A) - if W = 25 pts
2007-10-27 Tampines-- (H) - if D = 26 pts
2007-11-05 Woodlands- (A) - if W = 29 pts
2007-11-16 Home------ (A) - if D = 30 pts (but that'll give Home 34 pts!!)
2007-11-21 Gombak---- (H) - if W = 33 pts

Hence apart from the 4 games vs the lesser teams which are all must-wins, SAFFC will need to: 1) beat Home should it only draw with Tampines, or
2) avoid defeat vs Home should it beat Tampines.

Not an easy task indeed, that's why I still very much favor Home to win the 2007 SLVC mini-league, :-)
