# Team----- P W-D-L F-A P- GD

1 Etoile-- 6 5-1-0 12-5 16 +7
2 Sengkang 7 4-1-2 13-9 13 +4
-----------------------------
3 Tampines-- 4 2-1-1 5-3 7 +2
4 Gombak---- 6 2-1-3 7-8 7 -1
5 Woodlands- 6 1-4-1 6-7 7 -1
6 Geylang--- 5 1-3-1 5-5 6 0

11 Albirex-- 4 0-2-2 3-6 2 -3
-----------------------------
12 Beijing-- 3 0-1-2 1-4 1 -3

Highlights:

1. Etoile FC are now the only unbeaten team so far... Just how long will they remain unbeaten?

2. Sengkang have came a long way this season, still sitting 2nd in the table and still with the most goals!! (having beaten Gombak twice already this season)
If they continue playing like this, I don't see why can't they better the best-finishes of 8th in 2002/03...

3. With Etoile meeting Woodlands again on 11-March, the 4-day gap may well be the quickest repeat match-up in the history of domestic football.
(Note that this observation is for different competitions though, excluding the 2-legged SG Cup/League Cup games in the past, which usually happened 3 days apart)

4. Eventhough both teams lost on the same day, Gombak moved slightly ahead of Woodlands in the table, on the virtue of more goals scored.

5. Up-to-date Stats:
Games-----: 28
Host Wins-: 3 (10.7%)
Draws-----: 10 (35.7%)
Away Wins-: 15 (53.6%)
Goals-----: 69 (2.46)

- Sengkang have now overtaken DPMM & Home into 5th place, with a win over Gombak in the 3rd-place playoff.

Highlights:

1. Congrats to Etoile FC on winning the 2010 League Cup!!

2. Since its launch, the cup as seen different winners every season. Woodlands are in fact the only repeat finalist so far...

3. Etoile became just the 2nd team (after '07 Woodlands) to win the cup with a 100% record. (4 wins out of 4 games, 1 win more than Woodlands though)

4. Woodlands, on the other hand, are still the only team to win the cup without conceding a goal all tournament!

5. Note that all 4 previous champions have won the cup with unbeaten records.

6. Stats:
Games-----: 12
Host Wins-: 1 (8.3%)
Draws-----: 3 (25.0%)
Away Wins-: 8 (66.7%)
Goals-----: 29 (2.42)
Home Goals: 9 (0.75)
Away Goals: 20 (1.67)

7. Last but no least, except for Etoile FC, the composition/order of the Top-4 teams in 2010 & 2007 are amazingly similar!!

2010: 2nd: Woodlands, 3rd: Sengkang, 4th: Gombak;
2007: 1st: Woodlands, 2nd: Sengkang, 3rd: Gombak!!

Highlights:
- Beijing is now the new bottom team behind Dalian...
- Etoile have a chance to overtake both Albirex/Geylang in their next game (against Geylang, coincidentally).
- Sengkang can move above SAFFC with a win (over SAFFC too!!) in the next game.
- Last but not least, none of the First Round games were won by the host in 90 mins.

15 Beijing 1 1 0-0-1 1-3 0 -2

* Teams that are still active in 2010 tournament.

Highlights all-time:
- Etoile is now the only team in the tournament with a 100% record!!
- Etoile have overtaken Albirex/Geylang with the superb win against Geylang at Bedok. Next targets to overtake will be: YL, Tampines & SAFFC.
- Similarly, Sengkang have also overtaken YL, Tampines & SAFFC with the win over SAFFC at CCK. Next targets to overtake will be: BKFC, DPMM & Home.
- With 2 games left to play and 5 points behind, Woodlands still have chance to take over the top, provided they win the tournament with 2 regulation victories and Gombak lose both games.
- Besides the Gombak-Home rivalry for 4-straight seasons, the other "4-seasons streak" is currently held by Tampines: they have lost in the Quarter-finals in every season of the tournament!! Poor them...
- Gombak/Woodlands' pedigree in the cup continues, as both of them have now made the Semis 3 times in the past 4 seasons, impressive!!

Highlights in 2010:
- None of the First Round & Q-finals games were won by the host in 90 mins. (Out of the 8 games played so far, as many as 6 were won by the guests, who scored 13 goals vs just 4 by the hosts)
- Out of the 13 goals scored by the guests, 11 were by Sengkang (6) & Etoile (5)!!
- The 8th-March league game between Woodlands & Sengkang surely need to be postponed now, given that both teams will play on 7th-March, be it final or for 3rd-place.
- Though the semis/final/3rd-place playoff will be at JBS, which is a neutral venue, Gombak/Etoile will be the "designated hosts" alphabetically, will that hand the advantages to Woodlands/Sengkang? We'll see...

"*" : teams active in current season
"**": Brunei DPMM's results in 2009 expunged due to FIFA ban.

Highlights:
1. Etoile FC have already overtaken Paya Lebar after 2 games.
2. Beijing can do the same with a win in their next game.
3. Albirex is now just 5 points behind Jurong FC.
4. When the league resume on 8-March, we could see the 5th to 9th-placed teams all have the last digit of their points as zeroes (520 - 390 - 350 - 310 - 280), provided the following happen:
- First, neither Woodlands nor Sengkang qualify for the last four of 2010 League Cup, so that neither teams play in the 3rd-place match or the final on 7-Mar, and the Woodlands-Sengkang match on 8-Mar will still go ahead.
- Second, Woodlands draw the game on 8-Mar to bring their all-time points to exactly 520.
-That would be "Five-Stars-in-a-Chain" (“五星连珠”)!!

Will post the all-time table again during the remaining logical checkpoints of the season (whenever the league takes a break of more than a week):

17 Feb 2010: Etoile FC 2-2 Sengkang

Etoile were so close to a first loss, even though the hard-earned point against Sengkang allowed them to overtake Paya Lebar Punggol in the all-time table after just 2 games.

Tampines is now the only side with 100% record, which will be under severe threat when they meet SAFFC on 19-Feb. This match will also be the 3rd SLVC (S.League Virtual Championship) game of the season.

If the games on the same day (presumably kicked off at the same time) are sorted alphabatically by the full name (SAFFC would be "Singapore ...") of the hosting team, the updated list would then be:
2009: 2nd game (Geylang 3-1 Albirex)
2008: 1st (Super Reds 2-1 Woodlands)
2007: 1st (Home 5-1 Super Reds)
2006: 3rd (Geylang 1-0 Sengkang)
2005: 4th (Woodlands 4-1 Paya Lebar, Balestier 0-1 Young Lions was counted as the "3rd" game)
2004: 6th (Home 4-1 Tanjong Pagar)
2003: 1st (Jurong 1-0 Tanjong Pagar, Woodlands 0-1 Geylang was the "2nd" game)
2002: 1st (Geylang 3-0 Home, "2nd" game = Gombak 1-3 Sengkang)
2001: 8th (Sembawang 2-1 Tampines, "7th" game = Clementi 1-1 Sengkang)

2000: 1st (SAFFC 1-0 Tampines or Geylang 2-0 Balestier)
1999: 1st (SAFFC 6-1 Sengkang or Home 4-1 Woodlands)
1998: 3rd (SAFFC 3-1 Home)
1997: 4th (Tanjong Pagar 4-0 Jurong)
1996: 2nd (Geylang 3-0 Sembawang)
The first home win of 2010 may probably come when SAFFC take on BKFC at CCK on 11-Feb, the 10th game of the season. ("9th" game = Sengkang vs Gombak) Let's see...
So there you go, with both host teams won by the same score line, the home drought in 2010 have ended:

2010: 9th Game (Sengkang 2-1 Gombak)

S.League Neutrality Analysis with Games @ JBS

The following are the basic assumptions of my analysis:
1) Games at JBS shall end as 0-0 (since both teams have home advantage at a neutral venue)
2) Games at elsewhere shall end as 1-0 for the home teams (as home advantage equates to a goalfor the host)

'The balance of the force' Table of S.League 2010:

# Team------- P- W--D--L F--A Pts GD
1. YoongLions 33 17-0-16 17-16 51 +1
2. Gombak--- 33 13-10-10 13-10 49 +3
3. Beijing(S) 33 13-9-11 13-11 48 +2
4. Home------ 33 13-9-11 13-11 48 +2

11.Woodlands- 33 12-6-15 12-15 42 -3
12.Geylang--- 33 10-7-16 10-16 38 -6

Highlights:
1. As expected, YL were benefited the most in this analysis, as they play 17 "true" home games (at JBS) this season, the most in the league.
2. Gombak should have had good reasons to dream of a first league title. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out for them so far...
3. Just look at how disadvantaged Geylang are!! Out of their 16 "home" games this season, 6 of them will be at JBS, leaving only 10 "real" home game for them, the least in the league.

Analysis on the previous seasons to follow shortly...

"Relegation" from S.League: 2010 Updates

While browsing RSSSF.Com for S.League info, I found that "Relegation" were being mentioned there during 1996, 1999 & 2003 seasons:

1996: "Apparently Police were relegated, Jurong and Home United promoted."
1999: "Marine Castle United's relegation apparently annulled."
2003: "Gombak United were demoted."

Apparently both comments above were wrong, as Police was renamed Home United after 1996, while no relegation has ever been instituted in S.League, including 1999 & 2003.

However, if we go through the past standings carefully, a number of teams that finished last (or near the bottom) did pull out of the league afterwards (mainly due to financial constraints), as if they were relegated:

2002: Gombak (last), Clementi (3rd-last)
2003: Sembawang (4th-last)
2004: Tanjong Pagar (last)
2005: Paya Lebar (last), Sinchi (2nd-last)
2006: Sporting Afrique (3rd-last)

The interesting question now is: Will that happen again to Super Reds (last) or Liaoning (3rd-last) in 2007?

It seemed more likely that Liaoning may face the fate, as it may lose its main sponsor soon... What do you think?
Updated the list for the past 3 seasons:

2007: Liaoning (3rd-last)
2008: Dalian (3rd-last)
2009: DPMM (3rd, just before the ban ), Super Reds (5th )

Any favourites for 2010 candidates? (hopefully none)

Point echoed by the league:

Similar to leagues that have a promotion / relegation system, where new clubs each season add spice and excitement to the league, the S-League has a system where teams apply and we admit 12 teams every season that best satisfy our stringent criteria on management capabilities, financial strength and technical abilities. The new teams admitted each season, thus perform the similar role of adding excitement to the league.
