2010 Season Target by Teams

2010 Season Target by Teams: (some with source, some with guess)
  1. SAFFC - Defend the league title, win back S'pore Cup, and progress further in ACL.
  2. Tampines - Win the league, win the cup. As for the league cup, err...
  3. Gombak - At least maintain the 3rd-place finish of last season, anything higher will be bonus.
(TODAYonline | Sports | Gombak on the move & ZaoBao: 只引进两名新兵 甘柏要至少保住第三名)

  6. Albirex - Top-4 (ZaoBao: 新潟引进三名 前日本联赛球员)
  7. Young Lions - "Finish higher up the table" (than 2009), i.e. at least 8th-place?
(TODAYonline | Sports | From cubs to Lions)
  8. Woodlands - Win any trophy (ZaoBao: 新联赛元老诺阿里要助兀兰夺标)
  9. Sengkang - Mid-table (assume at least 8th? ZaoBao: 去年排名第10 盛港今年力争升上中游)

"Relegation" from S.League: 2010 Updates

While browsing RSSSF.Com for S.League info, I found that "Relegation" were being mentioned there during 1996, 1999 & 2003 seasons:

1996: "Apparently Police were relegated, Jurong and Home United promoted."
1999: "Marine Castle United's relegation apparently annulled."
2003: "Gombak United were demoted."

Apparently both comments above were wrong, as Police was renamed Home United after 1996, while no relegation has ever been instituted in S.League, including 1999 & 2003.

However, if we go through the past standings carefully, a number of teams that finished last (or near the bottom) did pull out of the league afterwards (mainly due to financial constraints), as if they were relegated:

2002: Gombak (last), Clementi (3rd-last)
2003: Sembawang (4th-last)
2004: Tanjong Pagar (last)
2005: Paya Lebar (last), Sinchi (2nd-last)
2006: Sporting Afrique (3rd-last)

The interesting question now is: Will that happen again to Super Reds (last) or Liaoning (3rd-last) in 2007?

It seemed more likely that Liaoning may face the fate, as it may lose its main sponsor soon... What do you think?
Updated the list for the past 3 seasons:

2007: Liaoning (3rd-last)
2008: Dalian (3rd-last)
2009: DPMM (3rd, just before the ban ), Super Reds (5th )

Any favourites for 2010 candidates? (hopefully none)

Point echoed by the league:
TODAYonline | Voices | Online Only - Foreign teams add value to the S-League

Quote:
Similar to leagues that have a promotion / relegation system, where new clubs each season add spice and excitement to the league, the S-League has a system where teams apply and we admit 12 teams every season that best satisfy our stringent criteria on management capabilities, financial strength and technical abilities. The new teams admitted each season, thus perform the similar role of adding excitement to the league.
