Projected S.League 2007 Finish base on 22-Aug Table (1st Method)

Home United will be the winner of S.League 2007!!

Why? Just read through...

As at 22-Aug, the S.League Table is as below:
#-- Team------ P- W- D L- GF-GA Pts GD
01. SAFFC----- 21 16 1 04 62-27 49 (+35)
02. Home------ 21 15 4 02 47-21 49 (+26)
03. Tampines-- 21 15 3 03 46-20 48 (+26)
04. YoungLions 21 09 5 07 31-31 32 (+0)
05. Gombak---- 20 07 4 09 32-27 25 (+5)
06. Woodlands- 20 06 7 07 29-35 25 (-6)
07. Geylang--- 21 06 5 10 23-28 23 (-5)
08. Liaoning-- 20 07 2 11 23-35 23 (-12)
09. Albirex--- 20 06 4 10 28-32 22 (-4)
10. Balestier- 20 05 5 10 24-31 20 (-7)
11. Sengkang-- 21 04 6 11 25-39 18 (-14)
12. Super Reds 20 02 4 14 12-56 10 (-44)

Based on the performance of each team above, the projected finish would be:
#-- Team------ P- W- D- L- GF-GA Pts GD
01. Home------ 33 24 06 03 74-33 78 (+41)
02. SAFFC----- 33 25 02 06 97-42 77 (+55)
03. Tampines-- 33 24 05 04 72-31 77 (+41)
04. YoungLions 33 14 08 11 49-49 50 (+0)
05. Gombak---- 33 12 07 14 53-45 43 (+8)
06. Woodlands- 33 10 12 11 48-58 42 (-10)
07. Liaoning-- 33 12 03 18 38-58 39 (-20)
08. Albirex--- 33 10 07 16 46-53 37 (-7)
09. Geylang--- 33 09 08 16 36-44 35 (-8)
10. Balestier- 33 08 08 17 40-51 32 (-11)
11. Sengkang-- 33 06 09 18 39-61 27 (-22)
12. Super Reds 33 03 07 23 20-92 16 (-72)

How? This is done by:
1.Taking the W, D, L, GF & GA of each team,
2.Divide them by the number of games each team has played so far,
3.Multiply them by the number of games to be played all-season (i.e. 33),
4.The projected points totals & GD of each team are then worked out accordingly...

This method may not be 100% right, since it doesn't take into account the recent form of each team. For one, I don't think Super Reds will end the season with just 16 points, given their good form after the transfer window...

We'll see how accurate this is at the end of 2007 season!!

More Stats on SAFFC 4-1 Home on 20-Aug

Just realized that apart from what's already published in an earlier post on SAFFC 4-1 Home on 20-Aug, there're several other stats of some significance which are now captured as follows:

SLVC Trivia:
1.With the 4-1 win, SAFFC became the first club to reach 200 points in all-time SLVC mini-league.
2.Both SAFFC & Home became the first teams to have played 100 SLVC games after the game.
3.Both SAFFC & Home now has 59 SLVC wins under their belt, more than every other team; though SAFFC may add-on to that in the coming games & become the first team to reach 60 wins.
4.Should SAFFC remain unbeaten as SLVC title holder until 16-Nov, it will meet Home again for another tussle, which may provide Home the golden chance to reach 60 wins, as well as earning its potential 12th title, before the end of 2007.
5.SAFFC (222) & Home (204) are also the only teams to have scored more than 200 goals in SLVC matches.

All-Time Table Trivia:
6.With the win, SAFFC has also reached its 110th S.League home win all-time, it could reach 116 should SAFFC win all its remaining 6 home games for 2007.
7.With 6 away games remaining, SAFFC could reach its 100th away win by the end of 2007, it currently has 94 away wins all-time.
8.With 6 home games remaining, Home could reach its 100th home win by the end of 2007, it currenly has 94 home wins all-time.
9.With 6 away games remaining, Home could reach its 80th away win by the end of 2007, it currently has 76 away wins all-time.
10.Currently SAFFC has 675 league points all-time, it could reach 700 should it collect at least 25 points out of its last 12 games in 2007.
11.Currently Home has 571 league points all-time, it could reach 600 should it collect at least 29 points out of its last 12 games in 2007.

Tampines 4-0 Sengkang: 3 Missions Accomplished!

Tampines has just beaten Sengkang 4-0 at home on 21-Aug, and achieved its 3 objectives prior to the game:

1.Tampines is now just a single point behind both SAFFC & Home after 21 rounds.
2.Tampines has joined SAFFC, Home & Geylang as clubs with >500 league points all-time.
3.Tampines (502) also kept up its pursuit on Geylang (506) for 3rd-place in the all-time table.

Base on the head-to-head records between them since 2001, Tampines has amazingly won 12 & drew 2 out of 14 meetings! By counting only the matches hosted by Tampines, the record is now 5 wins & 1 draw.

Tampines' Triple Missions on 21-Aug

After SAFFC destroyed Home 4-1 on 20-Aug, Tampines will hope to take maximum advantage of this result, by beating Sengkang in the next match on 21-Aug, in order to:

1.Close the gap with the top-2 to just 1 point.
2.Break into "Club-500" in terms of all-time points.
3.Move closer to Geylang in the all-time S.League table.

For the 2nd objective alone, a draw will do, as they currently have 499 points.

Base on the head-to-head records between them since 2001, Tampines has amazingly won 11 & drew 2 out of 13 meetings! By counting only the matches hosted by Tampines, the record was 4 wins & 1 draw.

Looks like Tampines should take this one, what do you think?

SLVC: SAFFC 4-1 Home United: A New Champion Finally!!

Wow, what a bang, SAFFC just routed Home 4-1 at CCK Stadium on 20-Aug! Unbelievable!!

Usually Top-Of-The-Table clashes are pretty tight affairs, so to win by 3 clear goals in such fixtures is definitely no mean feat, though the fact that Home was playing its 3rd game in 6 days while SAFFC has rested for 15 days prior to the game may also be the contributing factor...

More info on the match at SLeague.Com's Preview+Details+Report, TodayOnline, ChannelNewsAsia & ZaoBao.

As mentioned in my earlier SLVC preview post, SAFFC has now achieved 6 objectives in 1 shot with this impressive victory:
1.SAFFC has overtaken Home at the top of 2007 S.League Table on G/D after 21 rounds.
2.SAFFC has avenged its previous SLVC defeat against Home on 18-May-2007.
3.SAFFC has regained leadership in the all-time SLVC mini-league standings.
4.SAFFC has improved its favourable SLVC record against Home to 7-4-4.
5.SAFFC has leapt from 12 to 4th-place in the 2007 SLVC mini-league.
6.SAFFC has won its 13th SLVC title, the most among all teams.

SAFFC's next game will be against Gombak on 27-Aug, stay tuned for a preview on this later.

However, as we marvel the way SAFFC wrested the SLVC title away, let us look at the solid "Home Run" enjoyed by the Protectors prior to this defeat:
1.Home has played 14 SLVC games in 2007 so far, 10 more than any other team;
2.Home has won 10, drew 3 & lost just 1 game to collect 33 points from this run;
3.Home has scored 32 & conceded only 16 goals for an iterim G/D of 16;
4.Home has held the SLVC title from 28-April to 20-Aug for a period of 114 days, the 4th-longest in-season reign (excluded those by season-end winners that spanned through several monthes of off-season, which certainly exagerated the figures); &
5.Home's title reign over 14 games is also the 3rd-longest in SLVC history;
6.Home looked set to finish as 2007 SLVC mini-league winner, unless SAFFC can avoid defeat & amass at least 30 points (i.e. 10 wins or 9 wins+3 draws) from its remaining 12 league games, which is surely quite a tall order.

Simply impressive, isn't it?

SLVC Preview: SAFFC vs Home on 20-Aug - Another Titanic Clash!!

Home United's next opponent on 20-Aug, defending champions SAFFC, is not just the most successful club in S.League history (with 5 championships & being the all-time table leader), but also the most accomplished team in SLVC alongside Home, having won the title 12 times, as well as topping the all-time standings of SLVC mini-league since 2002, only to be overtaken by Home recently on 17-Aug-2007.

The following were SAFFC's 12 previous SLVC title winning matches:
006 1996-05-07 Home------ Sing. AF-- 0 2
015 1996-07-13 Geylang--- Sing. AF-- 0 2
068 1998-07-25 Woodlands- Sing. AF-- 0 3
125 2001-06-01 Sing. AF-- Jurong---- 2 0
136 2001-08-18 Sing. AF-- Tampines-- 8 2 *The Record Win for a SLVC Challenger!!

205 2003-08-30 Sing. AF-- Geylang--- 3 2
228 2004-06-30 Sing. AF-- Geylang--- 2 0
249 2005-05-14 Sing. AF-- Tampines-- 3 2
267 2006-03-10 Sing. AF-- Home------ 2 1

In this titanic clash, several things will be at stake:
1.SAFFC (currently 2nd in the league) will hope to beat Home (current leader) to overtake the top spot on Goal Difference.
2.SAFFC will be keen to exact revenge on Home who beat them 2-0 on 18-May-2007, which was also an SLVC match.
3.SAFFC will also hope to regain its leadership in all-time SLVC mini-league standings, with Home just 1 point ahead.

Unlike the few teams Home played earlier on, SAFFC is understandably one of the only 2 teams (the other is surprisingly Gombak United) that fared better against Home head-to-head in SLVC, having met 14 times: won 6, drew 4 & lost 4; scored 19 & conceded 17 in the process.

List of results as follows: (WDL was from SAFFC's of View)

In terms of playing against Home as host & challenger, SAFFC's results were also favourable, having won twice and drew once according to the above listings.

In fact, SAFFC has never lost as host (holder/challenger regardless), & has only lost once to Home as a challenger (home/away regardless), which happened to be the same match on 18-May-2007 as mentioned in point #2 above.

For more info on the match-up, please visit previews on SLeague.Com & TodayOnline.

Who do you think will win on 20-Aug? With both teams fighting hard for the 2007 League Title & Tampines preying from behind, it is going to be yet another electrifying contest!

Geylang 2-1 Albirex: Foreign Team's Unbeaten Streak Ended

On 19-Aug, the unbeaten run enjoyed by the S.League's Foreign Teams has finally came to an end as Geylang edged out Albirex at home with an 85th-minute goal. More info on the match at:
S.League's
Preview + Details + Report,
ZaoBao's Report:
新联赛 芽笼2比1力挫新潟 &
ChannelNewsAsia's Report:
Football: Geylang beat Albirex in S.League match.

It is also worth noting that this is the only 2nd time Geylang has defeated Albirex in
11 encounters since 2004.

With this win, Geylang has climbed from 11th (before 16-Aug) to 7th-place in 2007 table, & also managed to pull away from Tampines in the all-time S.League table for now, though I still very much expect Tampines to overtake Geylang before the end of 2007, based on their relative performances so far.

The full list of matches involving foreign teams since 13-July til 19-Aug, where they were only beaten twice, with an 8-games unbeaten run from 17-July to 15-Aug:

Tampines 1-1 Home Keep Title Going...

On 17-Aug, Tampines was unable to break Home Utd's hold on the SLVC title after a 1-1 draw at Jalan Besar Stadium. Details of the match are available at S.League.Com's Preview+Details+Report, TodayOnline, ChannelNewsAsia & ZaoBao.

This disappointing draw not only ruined Tampines' hope to close the gap with the top-2 sides, but also blew its chance to join the "Club-500" sooner, with its all-time points total now stucked at 499.

As for Home, this valuable draw not only preserve its cushion at the top of S.League 2007 table, but also allowed it to overtake SAFFC as the sole leader in the all-time SLVC mini-league.

Home's record as the current SLVC holder is now 10 wins & 3 draws. With just 13 games to go before the season ends, Home will most likely finish as the winner of SLVC mini-league in 2007!

Home's next SLVC game is another big one, this time against defending champions SAFFC, previews available at S.League.Com & TodayOnline. A SLVC preview will also be put-up shortly.

List of Bottom-4 Clubs since 1996

Having authored the list of top-performing S.League clubs on Wikipedia, I thought it would be interesting to present the list of bottom-4 clubs as well, to see who've been the worse teams in the league history from 1996 to 2006, :-p

Note:
1.The bottom 4 teams in 1996 were obtained from the combined table of both series.
2."Rankings" in the table are sorted based on the higher number of worst finishes.
3.In case of ties, the teams who had the worst finish earlier are placed "higher".

Trivia:
1.Sengkang, with 3 rock-bottom finishes, has been the worst team in S.League!
2.Balestier, together with Sengkang, made "most apperances" in Bottom-4 List.
3.SAFFC & Albirex are the only 2 teams "missing" from the list fortunately...
4.Korean Super Reds & Liaoning Guangyuan are excluded as they joined fr 2007.
5.Past Champions appearing in the list include: Home Utd, Tampines & Geylang.
6.Bottom 4 teams as at 17-Aug-2007: SuperReds, Sengkang, Balestier & Geylang.

Geylang is now in "Club-500", Tampines to follow soon...

Just realized that Geylang has now amassed more than 500 S.League points all-time, after its 2-0 away win over Woodlands on 16-Aug (Details at TodayOnline's Report, ChannelNewsAsia & SLeague.Com), which gave it 503 points in total.

Based on the all-time table published on 13-Aug, it has in fact reached the 500 points mark after its previous match, a 0-0 home draw with Balestier back in 31-July.

Congrats to Geylang for reaching this remarkable milestone!! It is only the 3rd club to have achieve that so far, after SAFFC & Home.

FYI, SAFFC reached 500 league points when it beat Geylang (what a coincidence!) 3-1 away on 2-Sep-2004; while Home made it with a 2-0 away win over the now defunct Sporting Afrique on 6-Aug-2006.

Currently, Tampines already has 498 points after its 2-1 win against Gombak on 14-Aug, it could also join the elite "Club-500" should it get a win vs Home United on 17-Aug.

The next best team in the all-time table is Woodlands with 439 points. However it can't reach 500 by the end of 2007 season with just 13 matches left (for a max. yield of 39 points, thus reaching 478 points at most) after the 2-0 defeat by Geylang at home on 17-Aug.

Sengkang 0-1 Liaoning: Foreign Teams Still Unbeaten

Liaoning has just beaten Sengkang 1-0 away on 16-Aug to prolong the unbeaten run of foreign teams in the S.League to 8 games as shown below (extracted from SoccerDB):

0 2007-07-13 Super Reds Sing. AF-- 0 - 1
0 2007-07-14 Liaoning-- Geylang--- 2 - 0
0 2007-07-15 Albirex--- YoungLions 0 - 1

1 2007-07-17 Super Reds Tampines-- 1 - 1
2 2007-07-20 Balestier- Liaoning-- 0 - 1
3 2007-08-01 Liaoning-- Super Reds 0 - 0
4 2007-08-03 Gombak---- Albirex--- 1 - 2
5 2007-08-06 Super Reds Sengkang-- 2 - 1
6 2007-08-07 Liaoning-- Gombak---- 1 - 0
7 2007-08-15 Albirex--- Super Reds 1 - 1
8 2007-08-16 Sengkang-- Liaoning-- 0 - 1

More info on the match at:
KallangRoar.Com's Report,
ZaoBao's Report: 辽宁再展雄风力挫盛港 &
S.League's Preview + Details + Report.

As mentioned, Albirex is now unbeaten in 2 games (1W1D, F3A2); while Korean SR hasn't lost for 4 games (1W3D, F5A3); but Liaoning have been the most impressive with more wins & cleansheets (4W1D, F5A0)!

Liaoning has now reached a season-high 7th place in the standings, with 5th/6th-placed Gombak/Woodlands (who are just 2 points ahead) firmly in sight...

The next match to watch out would be Geylang vs Albirex on 19-Aug, can this run continue by then?

Based on the head-to-head records between them since 2004, where Geylang only won 1 out of 10 encounters, it is very likely that Albirex, having won 5 & drew 4 out of the remaining 9 games, can at least secure a draw, :-)

Some Quick Trivia:
1.Tampines was Challlenger for 7 of these matches, & as Holder in the other 5.
2.Tampines has never won as a Challenger against Home United (3 Draws 4 Losses).
3.Tampines played away 7 times as well, & was at home ground for the remaining 5.
4.Tampines did beat Home once away, but only drew 2 & lost 4 in 6 other away games.
5.Tampines' only other victory was achieved in 25-Aug-04 at home ground as a Holder.
6.Tampines' record at home as a Challenger against Home United was 1 Draw & 2 Losses.

For the 17-Aug tie, Tampines will be playing at home ground as a challenger.

Can they break the winless jinx as listed in points #2 & #6 above? We'll see... :-)

Albirex 1-1 Korean SR: Foreign Teams' Unbeaten Run Continues

I previously posted that the the 3 foreign teams haven't lost since 16-July, this run has now continued after 2 foreign teams, Albirex & Korean SR, squared off to a 1-1 draw on 15-Aug. More info on the match at:
ZaoBao's
Report,
ChannelNewsAsia's Report,
TodayOnline's
Preview + Report &
S.League's
Preview + Details + Report.

Albirex is now unbeaten in 2 games; while Korean SR hasn't lost for 4 games in a row, and more significantly the latest draw has brought its season tally to double digits, thus avoiding the embarassing fate of single digit finish in a season, "enjoyed" by the following "elite" group of teams:

Team------------- Season Games- Record Points PPG--
Paya Lebar------- 2005-- 27---- 1-1-25 4----- 0.148
Home United------ 1997-- 16---- 2-1-13 7----- 0.438
Sembawang Rangers 1997-- 16---- 1-5-10 8----- 0.500

Marine Castle---- 1998-- 20---- 2-3-15 9----- 0.450

Will this unbeaten run continue when Liaoning Guangyuan takes on Sengkang Punggol at Hougang Stadium on 16-Aug? It is also worth noting that Sengkang has also lost its last match against another foreign team, Korean SR earlier in 6-Aug.
More info on this tie is available on S.League's Preview.

SLVC Preview - Tampines vs Home on 17-Aug: An electrifying contest!

Home United's next SLVC opponent on 17-Aug, Tampines Rovers, has won the SLVC title 8 times & currently ranked joint-4th all-time (with Woodlands), behind:
1.SAFFC------- (12),
2.Home-------- (11) &
3.Geylang----- (10).

Tampines Rovers's all-time record in the SLVC mini-league is 5th best, having played 60 macthes, won 27, drew 12 & lost 21, amassing 93 points in the overall standings, behind:
1.SAFFC-------- (58-23-18, 197),
2.Home--------- (59-20-19, 197),
3.Geylang------ (32-17-22, 113)&
4.Woodlands---- (27-18-24, 99).

Should Home earn at least a draw against Tampines, they will replace SAFFC as the sole leader in the SLVC all-time mini-league.

If Tampines win this contest instead, it will not just increase its SLVC titles won & mini-league points total, but also overtake Geylang in the All Time S.League Table, who are currently just 2 points ahead after Tampines' 2-1 over Gombak on 14-Aug!

Tampines has met Home 12 times in the SLVC so far; it won 2, drew 3 & lost the other 7; scored 20 & conceded 28 in the process.

Coincidentally, Tampines last SLVC title was also wrested away by Home on 28-Apr in a 1-3 loss, it would surely like to exact revenge in the coming fixture!

The following are Tampines' 8 previous SLVC title winning matches:
045 1997-07-08 Tampines-- Jurong---- 3 1
133 2001-07-26 Tampines-- Tan. Pagar 2 1
143 2001-10-06 Geylang--- Tampines-- 0 1
199 2003-07-17 Tampines-- Sinchi---- 5 1
235 2004-08-17 Sinchi---- Tampines-- 0 2
248 2005-05-04 Woodlands- Tampines-- 0 3
276 2006-10-15 Woodlands- Tampines-- 1 3
304 2007-04-02 Balestier- Tampines-- 1 3

Who do you think will win on 17-Aug? With both teams fighting fiercely for the 2007 League Title & SAFFC sandwitched in-between, it is going to be an electrifying contest!

SLVC - Title remains Home after 3-2 win over Balestier

Despite scoring just 2 goals against Balestier's "3", Home United managed to win 3-2 on 14-Aug, thanks to its opponent's own goal. Details are available at S.League's Match Details+Report, TodayOnline, ChannelNewsAsia & ZaoBao.

Balestier's losing streak against Home in SLVC is now extended to 9 straight games, how unfortunate for it! This is also its 2nd SLVC loss to Home United in 2007, after a 1-3 defeat at home on 2-Apr.

Meanwhile, Home's record as the current SLVC holder is now an amazing 10 wins & 2 draws, their next match is a top-of-the-table clash against Tampines on Aug-17th.

With this result, Home has also achieved several significant milestones:
1.It has pulled level with SAFFC at the top of the all-time SLVC mini-league table with 197 points.
2.It has bacame only the 2nd side to have scored (202) more than 200 goals in SLVC alongside SAFFC (218).
3.It has amassed the most number of wins (59) among all teams in SLVC matches, followed by SAFFC (58).

A preview shall be posted very soon. For the time being, why not watch the corresponding S.League's Trailer?

SLVC Preview - Home vs Balestier on 14-Aug: Who will win?

Home United's next SLVC opponent on 14-Aug, Balestier Khalsa, has a long history in SLVC, having taken part since the first ever SLVC match in 1996, which it lost to Home as well (what a coincidence!!), who were known as Police back then.

It has won the SLVC title 3 times & currently ranked joint-7th all-time with Young Lions (also 3), behind
SAFFC------- (12),
Home-------- (11),
Geylang----- (10),
Woodlands---- (8),
Tampines----- (8) &
Tanjong Pagar (4).

Despite their 3 title-wins, Balestier's all-time record in the SLVC mini-league is a more lowly 10th best, having played 32 macthes, but won just 3 (these were all title-winning games), drew 4 times & lost all the remaining 25, amassing only 13 points in the overall standings, behind
1.SAFFC-------- (58-23-18, 197),
2.Home--------- (58-20-19, 194),
3.Geylang------ (32-17-22, 113),
4.Woodlands----- (27-18-24, 99),
5.Tampines------ (27-12-21, 93),
6.Tanjong Pagar- (15-11-16, 56),
7.Young Lions---- (11-2-10, 35),
8.Sinchi----------- (4-3-8, 15) &
9.Clementi--------- (2-9-9, 15)

Should Home beat Balestier on 14-Aug, they will match SAFFC's all-time points total in the SLVC mini-league.

It is also worth noting that Balestier's first ever SLVC title only came in 2004, almost 8 years since it began playing in the S.League. As implied earlier, it has never been able to defend its SLVC title, always lost in the very next games as a title holder.

Balestier's SLVC record against Home United was equally pathetic, having lost all 8 meetings so far. The other team Balestier fared worst against in SLVC is SAFFC, whom it only drew once & lost 7 other times.

The following are Balestier's 3 previous SLVC title winning matches:

233 2004-08-03 Woodlands- Balestier- 2 3
246 2005-04-24 Balestier- Tampines-- 2 0
303 2007-03-29 Super Reds Balestier- 0 2

Who do you think will win on 14th-Aug? Speaking on past records alone, the answer is pretty obvious, but who knows?

S.League Milestone Games - Comparisons between Original / Alternate Versions

Similarities:
1.SAFFC still top both standings winning all 4 games it took part.
2.SAFFC also scored the most number of goals in both versions.
3.Home United still maintained its 100% records in both versions.
4.Korean SR was the surprise package: the only other team with 100% record.
5.Sengkang is still hapless as the only team to lose all games in both versions.

Differences:
1.The Original Version contained 15 teams, while the Alternate Version has 14.
2.The Home Teams are more dominant in the Alternate Version, with 10 wins to 5 vs Away Teams.
3.Except SAFFC, every other team occupy different positions in both versions.
4.Jurong, Balestier, Paya Lebar, Albirex & Clementi, who were present in the Original Version, are out of the Alternate Version.
5.Tanjong Pagar, Liaoning, Afrique & Sinchi, who were absent from the Original Version, are in Alternate Version.
6.Tampines was still the "luckiest" team by participation, but not so lucky in terms of results as they lost all 5 games played & firmly rooted at the bottom of the Alternate Version.
7.Tampines also conceded the most number of goals in the Alternate Version. This a far-cry from their 2nd-placed performance in the Original Version.
8.The 2nd position in the Alternate Version now goes to Woodlands, who also played 5 games, though they could only manage a negative goal difference.

3.Conversely, Clementi is the all-time worst team, losing all 4 games it took part.
4.Not surprisingly, Clementi also leaked the most number of goals at 11.
5.The away teams were much more dominant than the home teams, with 10 wins to 5.
6.Tampines is the "luckiest" team to have taken part in most (6) Milestone Games.

S.League Milestone Games - Alternate Version

Earlier in the day I've posted The list of S.League Milestone Games since 1996.

Having gave it more considerations, I thought it would be interesting to also publish an alternate list which excluded the title playoff game between SAFFC & Geylang United in 1996, as it is not a "regular-season game" per se, although the general convention of this blog has always been to include that game, :-)

In the alternate list, the 100th game remained the same, while the rest shifted by one game, hence the 1700th (in fact the 1701th) S.League game would be on 7-Aug-2007 between Liaoning & Gombak...

S.League Milestone Games (Alternate Version):
#--- Date------ Home Team- Away Team Score
0100 1996-09-21 Tampines-- Sing. AF-- 1 2
0201 1998-04-25 Geylang--- Gombak---- 2 0

Liaoning 1-0 Gombak: Rise of the Foreign Contigent?

Mind you, the 2 new foreign teams have really strengthen quite a bit after the mid-season transfer window, as confirmed by Liaoning's dramatic 1-0 win over Gombak tonight (more info from S.League match preview, report, details, ChannelNewsAsia, & 早报体育).

Korean SR hasn't tasted defeats in the past 3 games (won 1 drew 2), while Liaoning has now gone unbeaten in the last 4 (won 3 drew 1), without conceding a goal some more!

Coupled with Albirex's 2-1 away win over Gombak on 3-Aug, the foregin teams have now won 3 matches in a row. More impressively, Albirex's 0-1 home loss against Young Lions on 15-July was the last time a foregin team have been beaten-up.

Foreign Team's performance since 15-July (thanks to SoccerDB):
16 2007-07-15 Albirex ---- Young Lions 0 - 1
17 2007-07-17 Super Reds - Tampines--- 1 - 1
17 2007-07-20 Balestier -- Liaoning--- 0 - 1
18 2007-08-01 Liaoning --- Super Reds- 0 - 0
18 2007-08-03 Gombak ----- Albirex---- 1 - 2
19 2007-08-06 Super Reds - Sengkang--- 2 - 1
19 2007-08-07 Liaoning --- Gombak----- 1 - 0

Am I just reading too much into this on-going trend? How long will it last? What do you think?

KSR vs Sengkang on 6 Aug 2007 is the 1700th S.League Match!

Korean Super Reds has just beaten Sengkang Punggol 2-1 on the eve of 6 Aug 2007 to register their 1st ever home win & just the 2nd victory of the season!!

As usual, the Preview, Report & Details of the game can be found on the Official S.League Site, as well as Channel News Asia & 早报网.

With this win, the Korean side has more than doubled their miserable tally of just 4 points from the first half of the season (1-1-13 in 15 games), having collected 5 out of the last 4 games (1-2-1).

However, I would bet that not many of you are aware that this is also the 1700th S.League macth since 1996...

Some all-time stats on the S.League so far:
Matches Played: 1700
Home Wins-----: 741 (43.6%)
Draws---------: 365 (21.5%)
Away Wins-----: 594 (34.0%)
Goals Scored--: 5733 (3.37)
Home Goals----: 3058 (1.80)
Away Goals----: 2675 (1.57)
Most Frequent Scores: 1-1 (165 times), 2-1 (134), 1-0 (126)

Time flies, isn't it?

TodayOnline.Com: Wounded Young Lions eager to bite back

Weekend • August 4, 2007
NTUC Income-Yeo's S-League 2007
Young Lions v Home United
Jalan Besar Stadium, Saturday 7.30pm

HOME United have a great opportunity to go top on Saturday.SAFFC are the current leaders in the S-League, but the Protectors are just one point behind and, crucially, have two games in hand over the Warriors.

A win over the Young Lions in Saturday's NTUC-Income Yeo's S-League 2007 match at Jalan Besar Stadium will see Home go top, but the home side are hardly pushovers.

The Young Lions are currently fourth and are itching to get back on track, after they were routed 5-2 by SAFFC recently.

S.League & Major League Soccer - Similarities & Differences

Having followed Major League Soccer (MLS) regularly for the past 2 seasons, more so after David Beckham announced his signing with Los Angeles Galaxy in January 2007, I can't help but noticed many similarities between the two leagues in Singapore & USA:

1. Both leagues began play since 1996.
2. Both leagues do not have a system of promotion / relegation.
3. Both leagues allowed the participation of foreign teams.
4. Both leagues have the same team strength of about 10-12 teams for the past few seasons.
5. Both leagues experienced teams expansion / contraction at different stages of their lifespans.
6. Both leagues saw some teams sat out for a few seasons before returning to the fold later.

On the other hand, there're some differences between them as well:

1. S.League Champion is determined from the league table only, unlike MLS' playoffs.
2. S.League do not have Geographical Conferences, unlike MLS' Eastern/Western Confs.
3. S.League's Schedule is balanced, i.e. each team meet one another equally often in a season.

Are there any other aspects that you may think of?
